What is A Magnetic Chuck?
A magnetic chuck is a workpiece holding machine that uses magnetic force to replace vises, mechanical clamps and fixtures to hold workpieces during processing such as grinding, milling or turning. It has gradually replaced traditional mechanical clamping systems, making the process of installing machined parts faster, cleaner and more reliable. Allowing us to focus on the accuracy of machining without worrying about workpiece instability.
How do magnetic chucks work?
The magnetic chuck uses the principle of magnetism to keep the workpiece in the correct position during the work process. The chuck itself is equipped with a set of strong magnets or an electromagnetic system, depending on the type (permanent or electromagnetic). These magnets generate a magnetic field, and since the poles of the ferrous part are opposite to the polarity of the magnet, they attract each other. When the magnetic field is activated, it can be held in place by creating a polarity for the ferrous work material connecting its south and north poles, without any mechanical clamping.
- With a permanent magnetic chuck, the magnet inside the chuck always has a constant magnetic field, but its magnetic flux is locked inside the chuck when closed.
- For electromagnetic chucks, you can activate the magnetic chuck by turning the current on or off, and electromagnetic chucks can also control the magnetic field strength, providing more flexibility for workpieces of different sizes and shapes. Amplifying and controlling the magnetic flux is the key to applying magnetic chucks to metalworking operations.
When we need to fix the workpiece on the chuck table, just open the chuck and the magnet will align with the top plate. Magnetic flux will flow across the panel, and when the iron workpiece is placed on top, it will be locked by the magnetic flux. No physical pressure is applied to the workpiece material.
